Living in Barcelona
In this post I will talk about living in Barcelona, where I will refer to some things to do, costs of living and more information for people who are interested in doing an internship in Barcelona.
Language
If you don't speak Spanish just like me, you might have some hesitation on moving to Barcelona because everyone here speaks Spanish. I can assure you that this is not a problem at all! Barcelona is an international city where most of the people speak and/or understand English. I have been living here now for over a month and until this day I did not face any problems regarding the language yet!
Tip!
The locals appreciate it when you try to speak Spanish! Before you come here you can study some basic language and the people really like it if you try to use the Spanish you know. They will help you if you are struggling and besides that they are just very appreciative.
Cost of living
The cost of living in Barcelona is out of personal experience around the 700/800 euros, which is a roughly estimated number. The rent really depends on what you want and where you want it. Every district in Barcelona has different prices, if you want to live directly in the city center you will most likely pay more rent then if you live in a different district outside of the center. Another big influence that determines the renting price is what kind of apartment you want. Personally I live in a shared flat based in Poblenou, 5 minutes from the beach and My renting price is 300 euros. The city center is easy to reach by public transportation or by foot because that is possible in this beautiful weather.
The public transportation is not that expensive, a single bus/underground ticket costs around 2 euro, a 3-month ticket is around 105 euro. Personally I love walking because there is so much to see in this beautiful city and the weather is getting better and better.
The supermarkets are not expensive at all, I talked about this as well in my previous post! Fruit is cheaper than in numerous other countries and to be honest it tastes better as well! The supermarkets offer a very brought selection of different ingredients so you will be able to have a varied diet. On average I spend about 60 to 70 euros a week on groceries but this really depends on a lot of factors and you can make it as expensive as you want.
Restaurants offer nice and proper meals for nice prices. On average you pay around 15 euros for a decent meal! This of course is different in every restaurant but if you don't have a lot to spend anymore you don't have to worry, there are enough possibilities.
Shopping
If you like shopping, you re coming to the right place! Barcelona offers a numerous stores and shops to spend your well earned money. From cheaper brands like Bershka, Zara and H&M to luxury brands like Emporio Armani, Dolce and Gabbana and Chanel. Another popular thing is vintage shopping! There are tons of small and cute little boutiques in Barcelona where you can find original and beautiful pieces.
Things to do in your free time
In previous posts I talked about some things you can do in Barcelona to spend your free time. Read theses for some detailed information. In Barcelona there are numerous spots and places you can visit to enjoy your free time. There are numerous parks to enjoy a nice meal and have a walk but you can also visit numerous tourist spots. The nice thing about Barcelona in my opinion is the combination of the old cultural things and the new modern age.
Tip!
If you have the possibility you should try to meet with locals and politely ask them if they have time to show you some nice spots. In this way you will see some things where you would not normally go if you just come here as a tourist.
Thanks for reading and more is coming soon!
Gracias, Adios!
